The EarthLungs Bees Project: Building a Brighter Future, One Hive at a Time

Imagine a world without bees. It's a scary thought, considering their crucial role in pollination, which is the driving force behind the regeneration of our planet's plant life and the health of our forests. The EarthLungs Bees Project tackles this head-on by:

  • Building and deploying beehives: They are constructing over 300 custom-built beehives, each designed to house over 60,000 bees within Kenyan planting sites. These aren't just any hives; they're a personalized space for these tiny superheroes.
  • Protecting Forests and Fostering Biodiversity: By creating thriving bee colonies, the project enhances pollination, leading to stronger and more resilient native plant species and healthier ecosystems.
  • Creating Sustainable Livelihoods: Empowering local communities to manage these hives provides them with a sustainable income through the sale of honey (around 20kg per hive annually!), propolis (known for its medicinal properties), and royal jelly. This reduces their reliance on environmentally damaging practices like logging and slash-and-burn agriculture.
  • Strengthening Community Stewardship: Beekeeping encourages local communities to actively engage with and care for their environment, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
  • Protecting Forests from Poachers: The activity surrounding the beehives creates a natural deterrent for illegal activities, safeguarding precious forestland.
