How Clozist Started: A Journey from France to New York
Clozist was founded by Julie and Benjamin, who share a vision of making sustainable living accessible to families. Their story began in Rouen, France, where Julie grew up surrounded by the values of repair, reuse, and respect for the planet. Her grandmother was a seamstress for Dior, and Julie learned early on that the best way to care for clothes is to keep them in circulation through mending and thoughtful use.
Julie's passion for sustainability extended beyond fashion. She sought out local, organic food, chose natural beauty products, and approached every purchase with intention. When she met Benjamin—a software developer and sailor from the same French town—they discovered a shared belief: that conscious choices could reshape how families live.
After moving to New York, Julie and Benjamin initially planned to open a zero-waste restaurant in Greenpoint. Benjamin had even trained as a master crêpe maker in Brittany to support the venture. But when lockdown hit in 2020, just days before they were set to sign the lease, their plans shifted. The timing felt less like a setback and more like a redirection.
When their daughter Elaia was born, Julie and Benjamin returned to an idea they'd always loved: e-commerce. Rather than a restaurant serving one neighbourhood, they could build a platform serving families everywhere who wanted sustainable, locally made products.
What Clozist Is Today
Clozist is an online marketplace for eco-friendly products designed for kids, babies, adults, and pets. We carefully select items from makers who share our values—those who prioritise materials that are safe, durable, and kind to the environment.
Everything we stock reflects our founding belief: that conscious choices should feel natural, not difficult.
