HOW TO PLANT
When to seed: Spring, late summer, or early fall during frequent rains and moderate temperatures. Can also be dormant seeded on frozen ground. Do not seed if frost is forecast.
Site preparation: Mow existing grass very short (0.5–1"), remove clippings, and rake out any thatch. Soil must be visible and loosened before seeding.
Seeding: Spread evenly using the built-in shaker directly over prepared ground.
Watering: Water lightly after seeding to begin germination. Keep soil from completely drying out for the first 1–2 weeks, then water as needed if seedlings show signs of wilting.
Mowing: Maintain a 3" height during the first year to prevent grass and weeds from crowding out young seedlings.
Fertilizing: For lawns without recent fertilization, apply a low-nitrogen organic fertilizer (such as 8-0-4) approximately 2–3 months after seeding.
Weed control: Remove excessive weeds by hand or natural methods before seeding. After seeding, remove unwanted weeds as needed. Do not apply broadcast weed killers — they will damage or kill your yarrow plants.
WHAT TO EXPECT
With regular watering, Yaak Yarrow germinates in 2–4 weeks. Plants will remain small for the first couple of months. By the second growing season, expect white flowers reaching 4–6" tall blooming from June to August. Flowering lawns can take 6–24 months to fully establish, particularly in thick or heavily fertilized grass. Patience is rewarded with a stunning, low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly lawn that improves every year.
