🌿 Good to Know
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) and should not be confused with other plants commonly called marigolds, such as Tagetes species, corn marigold, or marsh marigold. The leaves are also edible, though this variety is primarily grown for its flowers. Because it is not grown as a dedicated food crop, it has not undergone edible crop certification.
Plant pharmacological research has suggested that Calendula extracts may have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-genotoxic properties in vitro. In traditional herbalism, calendula preparations are used topically to soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and support wound care.
🌱 How to Grow
- Sow seeds directly into the ground or into pots after the last frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier.
- Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil — Calendula thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade.
- Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Thin seedlings to around 30cm apart.
- Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season.
- Harvest petals in the morning once flowers are fully open for the best flavour and colour.
