Meet Michelle Li: Founder of Clever Carbon and Women and Climate
Who is Michelle Li?
Michelle is a Climate Champion running two organisations: Clever Carbon and Women and Climate. At Clever Carbon, she teaches people about carbon footprints in an accessible, engaging way. At Women and Climate, she creates a joyful and supportive space for women to learn and discuss climate action.
Michelle has been interviewed about Clever Carbon and Women and Climate by Green for the Blue.
How did Michelle get into climate work?
Michelle has studied climate change through courses on Coursera, including Introduction to Sustainability. She dedicates time each week to reading, podcasts, and climate media to deepen her knowledge.
Originally based in New York, Michelle became a nomad in February 2023.
What are Michelle's concerns about climate change?
Michelle believes we have limited time to complete the world's largest change management challenge. Her main concern is whether we can act fast enough to prevent widespread collapse.
Why did Michelle create Women and Climate?
Michelle founded Women and Climate because traditional networking events didn't satisfy her need for deeper conversations. She wanted to connect like-minded women, share different perspectives, and make it easier and more enjoyable for women to start their climate journey—especially as someone who transitioned from tech to becoming a Climate Champion.
While the community began as a personal project, Michelle soon realised many women would benefit from the support and belonging it offers.
Where is Women and Climate located?
Women and Climate started in New York and now operates in over 23 cities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
What's Michelle's vision for Women and Climate?
Michelle wants to unite all women passionate about climate action. Her vision includes regular virtual events for networking and learning, and getting Women and Climate speakers featured at major global events like COP, Davos, and SXSW.
