🪴 How to Grow
- Step 1 – Start indoors: Sow seeds indoors mid-February to mid-April. Using bottom heat helps maintain the ideal soil temperature of 15–21°C (60–70°F).
- Step 2 – Sow depth: Plant seeds 3mm (1/8") deep. Keep the soil just moist — not wet.
- Step 3 – Germination: Seeds typically sprout within 2–3 weeks.
- Step 4 – Transplant outdoors: Move seedlings outside or direct sow starting mid-April once conditions are suitable.
- Step 5 – Spacing: Thin plants to 45–60 cm (18–24") apart to allow good airflow.
- Step 6 – Ongoing care: Pinch stem tips several times in spring and early summer to delay flowering and encourage leafy growth. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Avoid over-fertilising — a little compost at planting time is all it needs.
- Step 7 – Drainage: Ensure soil is loose and free-draining. Waterlogged roots will cause rot. Raised beds work particularly well.
- Step 8 – Divide periodically: Every 3–4 years, divide your sage plant to keep it vigorous and productive.
