About Sarah's Silks Wholesale
A Legacy of Play: The Story of Sarah's Silks
Sarah's Silks is a company built on a love of creativity and a mother's passion for imaginative play. It all began in the 1970s when Sarah's mom instilled in her the value of make-believe through handmade dress-up clothes.
Fast forward to the 1980s, and Sarah finds herself working as a nurse in Guatemala. There, she's captivated by the vibrant textiles and the concept of simple, multi-use toys.
In 1994, the spark ignites. Sarah's son, Josh, craves costumes for his pretend play. A simple square of dyed silk becomes a Peter Pan cape, then a turtle shell, then a Superman tunic. The possibilities are endless! Soon, Josh's basket of colorful silks becomes the envy of the neighborhood.
A teacher requests a rainbow silk, and with a little ingenuity, Sarah and Josh discover a rainbow-making dip-dye technique. Rainbow becomes the hottest colorway, and Sarah sees a wider potential for her creations.
Sarah's Silks is born. Local shops offer her Playsilks, and she expands her offerings to include capes, skirts, and other open-ended silk toys. Stores worldwide take notice, and the business flourishes.
Sarah's sons, Noah and Morgan, become her design muses, inspiring new toys over the next two decades. Her involvement with the Summerfield Waldorf School deepens her understanding of early childhood education and imaginative play, further shaping her creations.
The 2000s see Sarah's husband, Mike, join the adventure. Together with Josh, they travel to China, visiting the family-owned factories where the silk toys are crafted and the nearby Chengdu Waldorf School.
Today, Sarah's Silks is a family-run legacy spanning over 30 years. Mike may have retired, but Sarah's passion remains strong. Every toy she designs prioritizes three things:
Open-ended play: Can children use it in countless ways?
Imagination: Is it beautiful and inspiring?
Sustainable materials: Are they natural, safe, and kind to the environment?
Ethical Production at its Core:
But Sarah's commitment goes beyond the toys themselves. Sarah's Silks is built on a foundation of ethical production. Our factories must meet three benchmarks:
Fair Trade: We ensure fair wages and safe working conditions for everyone involved in creating our products.
Empowerment: We partner with factories that support local communities and empower workers, particularly women.
Transparency: We believe in open communication throughout our supply chain.
Sarah's Silks is a testament to the power of imagination, the importance of creative play, and the enduring love between a mother and her children. We are committed to providing not only beautiful and inspiring toys, but also doing so in a way that is ethical and responsible.
