How We Live Sustainably: Clozist Founders' Real Habits
How We Live Sustainably: Beyond What We Sell
At Clozist, sustainability isn't just the products we make – it shapes how we live every single day. Here's what that actually looks like for us, and how we work to reduce our environmental impact through the choices we make at home and in our community.
Travel and Transportation
We minimize airplane travel and choose trains whenever possible. For daily trips around the city, we rely on public transportation rather than owning a car – we only rent one when it's absolutely necessary.
Home Essentials and Kitchen Habits
Our bathroom is plastic-free. We've switched to solid shampoo and bar soap, and we actively source organic food from local producers to cut our carbon footprint.
In the kitchen, recycling, composting, and precycling are routine. Precycling means we separate materials before they become waste. We bring reusable bags to shops and politely decline plastic ones.
Fashion and Packaging
Our wardrobes focus on eco-conscious and pre-loved clothing, sourced from vintage shops like L Train Vintage and Beacon's Closet.
We minimize printing within our business and removed packing slips from our packages to reduce paper waste.
Family and Community Involvement
We choose second-hand toys for our son, cutting plastic consumption while keeping playtime fun. We compost and recycle through local partnerships with Impact Hub and Walter Recycling.
Our son attends Growing Up Green Charter School, where sustainability is built into every part of the curriculum. Julie also serves on the NYC Fair Trade Coalition Advisory Board, working to advocate for fair and ethical practices across our supply chains.
Small Changes, Real Impact
These habits reflect how we translate our values into everyday actions. We believe small choices, made consistently and shared widely, add up to meaningful change. If you're looking to make your own family more sustainable, we hope these examples inspire you to start where you are – whether that's swapping one product, choosing vintage, or simply rethinking a daily habit.
