Perfil Artesano
Laos es el país per cápita más bombardeado del mundo. De 1963 a 1973, Laos se convirtió involuntariamente en un peón durante la Segunda Guerra de Indochina. Durante este tiempo, la Fuerza Aérea de Estados Unidos lanzó un avión cargado de bombas de racimo cada ocho minutos durante nueve años consecutivos. Inmediatamente después de la guerra, los aldeanos comenzaron a recolectar aluminio de las bombas que explotaron y lo convirtieron en cucharas. Una familia que se mudó a Ban Naphia desde la provincia de Houaphan, más al norte, enseñó esta habilidad a los aldeanos. Al principio, cinco familias producían cucharas bomba recicladas. Hoy en día, hay aproximadamente 13 familias que producen más de 150.000 cucharas al año a partir de chatarra de aluminio de guerra y de no guerra. La producción se ha ampliado para incluir pulseras, pendientes y colgantes.
Trabajamos con artesanos en Ban Naphia, ubicado en la provincia de Xieng Khuang, que obtienen aluminio de piezas de aviones y bombas lanzadas en todo Laos durante la Guerra Secreta (Guerra de Vietnam) en la década de 1960. La comunidad que produce las bombas recicladas ha sido capacitada por Helvetas, una ONG suiza, sobre cómo manipular los metales de forma segura, incluida la fundición y limpieza del aluminio antes de su uso.
Es importante señalar que de todas las bombas lanzadas en Laos, el 30% no explotó. Las municiones sin detonar (MUSE) siguen representando una amenaza importante para la seguridad de los aldeanos en las zonas rurales de Laos. En su búsqueda de chatarra, muchos aldeanos encuentran UXO y sufren lesiones catastróficas. El espíritu generoso y el ingenio de los artesanos laosianos son evidentes en nuestra colección de productos de bombas reciclados. La guerra y los persistentes ataques aéreos de la década de 1960 dejaron el campo lleno de bombas y metralla de metal. Los restos de este legado se han transformado en emblemas de paz.
