How to Make Simple Seitan: A Plant-Based Protein Guide

Never made seitan before? Here's a good place to start.

Whether you're new to plant-based eating or just looking to add more variety to your meals, seitan is worth getting to know. We've put together our favourite video recipe below to help you get started — it's straightforward, satisfying, and uses just a handful of ingredients.

Why eat seitan?

Seitan is one of the most protein-dense plant-based foods around. Every 100g contains roughly 20g of protein — putting it on a par with many cuts of meat and fish, which typically offer between 15 and 24g per 100g. That makes it a genuinely useful addition to a vegetarian or vegan diet.

It's also surprisingly mineral-rich. Seitan contains at least 8 different minerals, including:

  • Magnesium and phosphorus — known for their anti-fatigue properties
  • Calcium — essential for strong, healthy bones
  • Iron — supports a healthy immune system and helps the body fight anaemia

Originally rooted in Asian cooking traditions, seitan has been a staple source of plant-based protein for centuries — long before it made its way into Western kitchens.
